With 350 days of sunshine, the Mexican resort area of Los Cabos between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo is a favourite for North Americans escaping the cold and rain, especially in the winter months.
Although the area is now fully recovered, it suffered major damage at the end of 2014 when Hurricane category 4 Odile caused a billion dollars worth of damage to the major hotels and infrastructure in the area. To many, Odile may have been an opportunity for the best luxury hotels in Los Cabos to come back stronger and even more luxurious than they ever were.
So, forget Spring Break, Los Cabos is filled with exclusive and over the top hotels, the best Mexican food, art and creative hubs and landscapes and heritage to fill your days. And remember to Pin my guide to Los Cabos for insider tips.
1. For over the top luxury – Las Ventanas al Paraiso
Rosewood’s property in Los Cabos is a great addition to the luxury brand and possibly the most premium option in Los Cabos with guest accommodations ranging from suites to villas, some of which are as big as 4,500 sq ft for the one bedrooms. Then there is the TY Warner Mansion, a 28,000 sq ft sanctuary on its own with all the facilities of a luxury home right on the beach.
The mansion comes with its own butler who is well versed in the art of putting together anything to fulfill the guest’s dreams. Fireworks are also available, as is the Mansion’s extensive cellar.
Prices starting at USD800 for the suites.

2. For romance by the sea – The Resort at Pedregal
Mentioned by many as THE resort in Los Cabos, the Resort at Pedregal is made of beautiful buildings and rooms that appear to be carved from the side of the rock (Pedregal) and all come with their own private pool and sea views. Located at the end of the beach and on a rocky outcrop where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.
The location could not be more romantic. Dinner at fresh seafood restaurant and Champagne bar, El Farallon, right where the seas meet and under the Land’s End rock formations is an experience worth the journey, even if you are not staying there. Class and elegance meet at this Mediterranean inspired resort.
Prices start at USD600.

3. For cool design and architecture fanatics – Viceroy Los Cabos
This property in the beach strip along San Jose del Cabo is a dream come true for design and architecture fanatics. The resort is right on the beach and made of several white buildings facing the ocean, with plenty of angles for Instagram-worthy photos. The rooms are techie and each comes with a sea facing balcony.
Touches of neon lights splash what would otherwise be a pure white environment. Pools and reflections add to the design’s exquisiteness and you’ll be served the best breakfasts under the Cabo sun in the Nest. Read my full review of Viceroy Los Cabos.
Prices start at USD300.

4. For serious fitness and spa lovers – Esperanza
All of the above resorts are located on the beach, but Esperanza is the only hotel enjoying a virtually private beach which can only be accessed through the resort. A member of the Auberge Resort group and Relais & Chateaux, this is another fantastically luxurious resort with just 57 casitas available for booking, a private residence and fractional share villas.
The resort is known for its cozy location on a rocky cove and for its indulgent spa, which includes steam caves and waterfalls, as well as classes like yoga and TRX. You can watch passing whales with the Nikon binoculars or the resort’s telescopes and the casitas come with their own balcony jacuzzis. The restaurant, right by the water’s edge, is as romantic as El Farallon, with some truly private tables.

5. Fit for celebrities and families – One&Only Palmilla
This is where John Travolta celebrated his 50th and where stars of the caliber of Ernest Hemingway, John Wayne and President Eisenhower stayed when visiting this sparkling desert town. The One&Only glamour arrived in Cabo to bring a dash of grand allure back in the 50s by the Mexican President at the time and it was the first resort to open in Cabo. The resort offers award-winning restaurants by the hand of chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and chef Larbi Dahrouch.
The hotel has an on-site golf course. Your preferences are captured before arrival and you will be assigned a butler at check-in. The decor and look and feel is reminiscent of Spanish colonial times and, since the 2015 refurbishment following Hurricane Odile, the resort is more cheerful and has a dedicated kids space manned by staff, so it is the best of the lot for families who can sign their younger ones over to lessons and activities.
For the ultimate indulgence, book the Villa Cortex which comes with a fully kitted office and an infinity pool over the water. The spa is 22,000 sq ft and is often chosen as the Best in North America – nothing to envy, Esperanza.
Prices start at USD800.

6. For the best sunset view – The Cape, A Thompson Hotel
Designed with a younger crowd in mind, The Cape’s location affords it the best sunset views in Los Cabos with a perfect line of sight along to El Arco and the sun setting behind the horizon. Los Cabos’ most famous sunset restaurant and bar is right above the hotel to prove this point. Hotel rooms are more your staple rooms than at other resorts, but all have sea views.
Upgrade to the corner suites for the sweeping ocean and beach views. Funky, hip and cool, this is the place where the young come to enjoy stylish rooftop drinks. The beach is small and rocky, so you are more likely going to enjoy the pool. The hotel is compact, unlike other sprawling resorts in the area, and secluded. Rooms come with hanging balcony daybeds, cocktail bars and free standing copper bathtubs.
Prices start at USD600.
